Why Did You Hire Me?

Thank you for hiring me today. But why exactly did you hire me? What job did you need me to do? What product or service am I providing? And what the heck am I talking about?

Harvard Business School professor, Clayton Christensen, is one of the world's leading experts on business innovation and growth. In his new book, Competing Against Luck, he discusses how businesses can successfully innovate by changing the questions they ask. The question isn't, "how can I better understand the customer?" or "what does the customer need?" The question is, "what job was my product or service hired to do?"

This is a question you can use for anything that requires an investment of time or money. Why do you hire books, a car, a sandwich, or a house? Why do you hire exercise, a movie, or a milkshake? There are deeper questions that you can uncover by asking why you are hiring?

Today, I hired this post to help me fulfill my personal mission. This post is helping me love, enjoy, encourage, and positively impact those within my circle of influence. See What is Your Why? I'm also hiring this post to help me improve my writing skills, connect me with family and friends, and hopefully add some value and make a positive impact. That's something for you to think about too. What is your why? What are you creating? And what job is your product or service you're creating being hired to do?

Back to my original question, why did you hire me today? This can be a rhetorical question or you can feel free to actually reply. Either way, I hope I did the job I was hired to do. And I hope this was worth the investment of your time.

Enjoy the day!
