Worthy
“I am grateful for the resistance and for the obstacles in my life that strengthen me, more patient, and more resilient.” This is how my journal began a few Aprils ago. I don’t remember any specific struggle at that time, but I do know I was reading Steven Pressfield’s The War of Art. Much of this book centers on the idea that Resistance is part of the creative experience. And the life experience. We cannot escape the pain, frustration, and struggles that life presents to us. So, what do we do with these experiences? The answer for me often begins with the Serenity Prayer. Followed by a prayer of gratitude. Because like them or not, the hard experiences of life strengthen us, more patient, and more resilient. If we CHOOSE to see them as opportunities for growth. We don’t have to like them. We usually don’t. But we can use resistance as fuel to fire us up and strengthen us.
Eknath Easwaran tells us that “Nirvana is really an awakening” by the one who “becomes aware of the wholeness of life and lives for the welfare of all.” Love grows when we sacrifice. Love connects us. Love is an awakening to the wholeness of life and our place in it. Love is the action of serving others and the contemplation of living well.
In Colossians, Paul advises us to “live a life worthy...growing in the knowledge of God.” What is a life worthy? One of gratitude, fullness, service, connection, love, and knowledge, to name just a few.
May we remember to live worthy, to live wholly, and to live gratefully.
Today and every day. This moment and every moment.
