Holiness, Hidden and Revealed

Be holy in all you do.

Rediscover the wonder and joy of life.

Holiness, hidden and revealed.

Those are strong words, especially when we consider the context. In this first letter attributed to Peter, this young church is told, “just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” This letter to these early followers of Jesus referenced the call in Leviticus for the Hebrew exiles to be holy. This passage reminds me we are not called to a life that is easy, but a life that is challenging, yet meaningful and fulfilling.

In one journal, I wrote, “My mission in life is not to have an easy life, but to find the wonder and joy in life. I hope to share hope and to encourage. To live life well and to help others rediscover this great wonder and joy as well.”

I wrote that holiness hides in the imperfections of ourselves, others, and our world. And holiness is revealed in our humble and earnest moments of action and contemplation. Those are wise words. I’m guessing I was reading someone wise and reflecting on THEIR words. But I love that image of holiness hidden in life’s imperfections. What better hiding place. And what better place to be revealed to us but in humble and earnest moments of doing and being.

I am not afraid of the word holy. I understand that it simply means set apart and uncommon. And I am totally fine with being set apart and uncommon in all I do. I am grateful for the moments of rediscovery. I am filled with wonder and joy when the hidden becomes revealed.

Today, I pray I may take those important moments to pause, breathe, and smile. Especially in the moments that are challenging. I’m learning and growing. I am imperfect, but I pray that within my imperfections, something uncommon may be revealed. To me, to those around me, and to this world that God so loves.
